SUPPORT ACTION4YOUTH - HELP DEV
Help someone like Dev become a superhero
Help young people like Dev
Having no friends, and being the last one picked at team games is demoralising and has a marked impact on mental health. But with your help, young people like Dev can be given the confidence to become a superhero.
Dev is 14, very shy and is always seen on his own. He is regarded as small for his age and always the last one picked for team games. Academically he does well and achieves top 10% in most subjects. But despite these achievements he would swap all of these to have a few friends, but he doesn’t know how to make them.
Now in his 3rd year in senior school, his shyness has developed into a lack of confidence, and he is starting to think he’ll never make friends.
All to often young people find it difficult to break down their inhibitions and express themselves. They can have an impact on their mental health and can have a lasting impact on their future development.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Action4Youth run The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award to give young people the opportunity to be the very best they can be. Dev’s mum convinced him to enrol in the hope it will help him overcome his shyness and help him win friends. She was right.
Dev joined a group with 5 others to undertake their DofE expedition which was a day’s walk followed by a night’s camping. At first Dev kept quiet and trailed along at the back of the group, his head down but with gentle encouragement he gradually blended into the group. The breakthrough came when Dev was the only one who could light the camping stove. In that short time, and for the first time in his life, Dev was a superhero and immediately at the heart of the group. The rest of that day, evening meal and camping out were amongst the best in Dev’s life. His friends from the expedition became his regular friends and he has flourished. A small thing can make a huge change.
Action4Youth can support young people like Dev through fun and challenging expeditions which take young people out of their comfort zones, whilst building confidence, teamwork, life skills and friendships.
